Conveyor Vision Inspection System - CVIS

Improve Inspection Quality, Speed and Accuracy

Automated Conveyor Based Vision Inspection System

The CVIS Conveyor Vision Inspection System from Sciotex is a modular, noncontact machine vision platform for high‑speed inspection of large parts and products on a conveyor. Using advanced 2D and 3D imaging, CVIS detects surface, weight and dimensional defects in real time, helping manufacturers replace subjective manual inspection with reliable automated quality control.

What Does CVIS Inspect?

CVIS is designed to handle a wide range of large parts and consumer or industrial products moving on a conveyor line.

Typical applications include:

  • Molded, cast, or stamped components (e.g., housings, covers, brackets, enclosures).
  • Large consumer products and assemblies (e.g., appliance components, housings, trays).
  • Automotive and aerospace components requiring stringent surface and edge quality.
  • Ceramics, glass, and composites requiring warp, flatness, or shape verification.
  • Large extrusions, panels, or plates requiring full‑surface defect detection.

Defects and Measurements Detected

CVIS combines high‑resolution imaging with advanced pixel‑by‑pixel algorithms to detect defects that are difficult or impossible to see reliably with the human eye.

It can be configured to detect:

  • Surface defects: bumps, blisters, inclusions, gouges, chips, pits, scratches, stains.
  • Edge conditions: sharp edges, cracks, chips, incomplete or malformed features.
  • Structural and shape defects: warps, bows, dents, deformations, out‑of‑flat conditions.
  • Dimensional deviations: height, curvature, contour, thickness profiles vs. golden master.
  • Cosmetic issues: glaze or coating anomalies, speckle patterns, foreign material.

In this example, the CVIS platform was configured for plates and bowls and can be adapted to many other large parts by modifying fixturing, lighting, optics, and software recipes.

Vision Inspection Platform for Large Parts and Products

Multi-Station Noncontact Inspection Architecture

CVIS uses multiple synchronized inspection stations rather than physically manipulating each part.

  • Station 1 – Top surface inspection: Line‑scan or area‑scan cameras capture transmitted or reflected light images of the top surface.
  • Station 2 – 3D geometry and warp inspection: Cross‑sections are stitched into a 3D map and compared to a golden master for warp and shape deviations.
  • Station 3 – Bottom surface inspection: A second imaging station captures the underside of the part to check for defects not visible from above.

This modular architecture lets Sciotex add or remove stations, cameras, or lasers to match the specific inspection envelope and resolution your application requires.

Performance, Speed, and Accuracy

CVIS is engineered for demanding high‑throughput manufacturing environments where every second and every defect matters.

  • Throughput: Designed for inspection rates on the order of 60 parts per minute in typical configurations, with room for optimization based on part size and line speed.
  • Resolution: Defect resolution on the order of 100–200 microns is achievable for many applications, depending on optics and field of view.
  • 3D sampling: Cross‑sections can be captured every few millimeters along the part travel, providing dense coverage for warp and contour measurement.
  • Accuracy: Similar platforms have demonstrated >99% defect detection accuracy with near‑zero false positives on high‑volume production.

Sciotex engineers tune camera resolution, lens selection, lighting geometry, and algorithms to your specific tolerances and defect types.

Integration into your Production Line

CVIS is designed as a turnkey or custom system that integrates into existing conveyors, material handling systems, and factory control networks.

Integration capabilities include:

  • PLC and fieldbus connectivity for accept/reject control, diverters, and line interlocks.
  • Digital I/O for triggering, encoder inputs, and reject mechanisms such as air knives or pushers.
  • Recipe management for different part types, sizes, and product SKUs.
  • Data logging of inspection results, defect images, and measurement values for traceability and SPC.
  • Optional integration with MES, ERP, or QMS systems for closed‑loop quality management.

Sciotex provides mechanical design, electrical integration, software, HMI, and commissioning as part of a complete solution, not just a pile of components.
