Inspection System Example

Print Inspection System for Screen-Printed Dinnerware

Automated grading of screen-printed decoration on plates, with sorting signals for each ware.

The Screen Decoration Vision Inspection System (SDVIS) is a LabVIEW vision application that automates the inspection of decorated dinnerware. It quantifies the magnitude of design and pattern defects on each plate, grades the ware as good, minor defect or major defect, and outputs signals to separate it.

Vision Inspection of Screen-Printed Decoration

What is print inspection?

Print inspection checks printed and decorated surfaces for defects in pattern, color and registration. On decorated dinnerware, the hard part is grading: deciding consistently, plate after plate, whether a flaw is acceptable, a minor defect or a major one, when human inspectors drift with fatigue and judgment.

The SDVIS measures how large each design or pattern defect is and applies defect limits to grade every plate. Its interface lets the user define plate dimensions, acquisition and analysis parameters, plate colors, regions to ignore or merge, and the defect limits for each grade, without programming.

How It Works

How the Print Inspection System Works

Each plate is imaged, compared with the expected decoration and graded against configurable limits.

1Define the plate

Dimensions, colors and regions set in the interface.

2Acquire

Each plate is imaged with configured acquisition settings.

3Analyze

Decoration is compared, ignoring or merging defined regions.

4Grade

Defect magnitude sets good, minor or major.

5Separate

Output signals route each ware.

What the System Does

Software Built for Consistent Grading

Grading decoration by eye varies between inspectors and shifts. The software applies the same limits to every plate.

Defect magnitude scoring

Each defect is measured, so grades follow clear limits.

Three-level grading

Good, minor defect and major defect match how ware is sold.

Ignore and merge regions

Regions can be excluded or combined to fit each design.

Setup without programming

An intuitive interface defines plates, colors and limits.
