Automated Test Equipment Use Cases: Semiconductor, Automotive, Aerospace and More

Automated test equipment is used wherever a product must be proven to work before it ships or returns to service. The biggest ATE use cases are semiconductor wafer and device test, automotive and EV electronics, aerospace and defense systems, medical devices, electronics manufacturing, and industrial and energy components. Each industry uses the same building blocks, instruments, switching, fixtures and test software, but with very different priorities: volume and cost per test in semiconductors, functional safety in automotive, traceability in medical, and long service life in defense.

This article is part of our complete guide to automated test equipment (ATE). Below, each use case covers what is tested, the methods used, what drives the design, and real examples of test systems Sciotex has built.

1. Semiconductor test

Semiconductor devices are tested twice or more: at wafer probe, where a probe card contacts every die on the wafer before it is cut, and at final test, after packaging, where a handler feeds devices to the tester. Tests include parametric measurements (leakage, thresholds, drive current), functional tests with high-speed digital patterns, and burn-in to screen early-life failures. Results bin each device by grade, and yield data feeds straight back to the fab.

Volume drives everything. High-pin-count turnkey testers dominate high-volume digital and memory test, while lower-volume, specialty and R&D devices often use custom or modular systems. Sciotex examples include an ASIC test system that generates high-speed digital input patterns and analyzes digital and analog outputs for timing and amplitude, and a wafer probe system for semiconductor testing.

2. Automotive and EV electronics

A modern vehicle contains dozens of electronic control units, plus sensors, actuators and, in EVs, high-voltage battery packs and power electronics. ATE supports the whole life cycle: hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) rigs validate control software, production testers check boards and modules, and end-of-line testers program, code and verify every finished unit.

  • ECUs and body controllers: CAN and LIN communication, diagnostic codes, inputs and outputs, sleep current and end-of-line programming.
  • Sensors and ADAS components: output vs calibrated stimulus, temperature compensation, alignment.
  • Battery modules and BMS: cell voltages, internal resistance, isolation resistance, balancing and communication.
  • Harnesses and connectors: continuity, shorts, insulation and connector retention.

Automotive suppliers work under IATF 16949 quality requirements and ISO 26262 functional safety, so traceable results for every serial number are expected. The automotive CAN bus test system Sciotex built reads and logs data from a vehicle computer and uses it to drive experimental conditions through data acquisition outputs.

3. Aerospace and defense

Aerospace and defense ATE tests avionics, radar and transmit/receive modules, navigation systems, munitions electronics and satellite subsystems, both in production and at depots, where line-replaceable and shop-replaceable units are diagnosed and repaired. Test programs must be documented, repeatable and supportable for decades, so obsolescence management and test program sets (TPS) that can move between platforms matter as much as speed.

Precision is often extreme. The ring laser gyro test systems Sciotex develops process over 60 high-speed digital and analog channels during testing, for gyros used in aircraft, satellites and other navigation applications.

4. Medical devices

Medical device ATE combines functional test with electrical safety tests such as patient and enclosure leakage current, under standards like IEC 60601-1. Every result must be traceable to the serial number, and the test system and its software must be validated, with electronic records controlled under FDA 21 CFR Part 820 and Part 11. Test design therefore emphasizes locked-down limits, user roles, audit trails and validation documentation alongside measurement accuracy.

5. Electronics manufacturing

Contract manufacturers and OEMs test printed circuit assemblies, power supplies, cables and connectors in high volume and high mix. A typical strategy layers in-circuit, boundary scan and functional test, each catching the defects it finds most cheaply. Fixture design and fast changeover are critical, which is why mass interconnect systems and well-designed test fixtures are central here. Sciotex examples include a cable test system, an electronic connector test system and an automated relay testing system.

6. Industrial, energy and process products

Industrial products often have signals and conditions no catalog tester covers: gases, optics, temperature cycles, high currents or long-duration runs. Custom ATE integrates whatever instruments the product needs. Sciotex has built an automated gas tester that uses an FTIR spectral analyzer and database-driven criteria to verify mixed-gas purity, an environmental chamber test system for HVAC equipment, and fiber optic test and inspection systems that detect microscopic defects on the draw tower.

What the use cases have in common

  • A clear test specification: every parameter, limit and condition, derived from the product requirements.
  • Instrument accuracy matched to tolerances, with guardbanded limits.
  • Fixtures and interfaces that contact the product reliably for hundreds of thousands of cycles.
  • Test software that separates sequences, limits and instruments, and records every result.
  • A plan for maintenance, calibration and obsolescence over the product’s life.

The seven measurements most often automated appear in every one of these industries; what changes is the tolerance, the volume and the paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

What industries use automated test equipment?

The main users are semiconductor manufacturers, automotive and EV suppliers, aerospace and defense, medical device makers, electronics manufacturers, and industrial and energy equipment producers.

How is ATE used in semiconductor manufacturing?

ATE tests every die at wafer probe and every packaged device at final test, using parametric and high-speed functional tests, and bins devices by performance. Burn-in screens early-life failures.

How is ATE used in the automotive industry?

Automotive ATE includes HIL rigs for control software validation, production testers for boards and modules, and end-of-line testers that program and verify ECUs, sensors, battery modules and harnesses with full traceability.

What is depot ATE in defense?

Depot ATE is used at maintenance facilities to diagnose and repair line-replaceable and shop-replaceable units from aircraft and weapon systems, running test program sets specific to each unit.

Why do medical devices need automated testing?

Medical devices need consistent, validated testing of function and electrical safety on every unit, with traceable electronic records, which automated test systems provide more reliably than manual testing.
