We designed a digital signal conversion device to bridge Mettler weigh scales and a PLC network. The Mettler scales communicate using SICS protocol over RS-232 and the PLC network is Profibus-DP. The device polls and aggregates mass values from six scales simultaneously, and transfers the data to the PLC with high reliability and low latency. The board features galvanic isolation among the six RS232 busses, the Profibus-DP bus, and the realtime microcontroller. The custom firmware was written and the boards were designed in-house.
