Benchtop Vision Inspection

Benchtop 3D Laser Scanning Inspection System

Measure and map long parts in 3D without touching them.

The Sciotex Benchtop Horizontal Inspection Platform scans each part with a laser triangulation sensor as a linear stage carries it past, capturing depth and surface reflectivity at 0.1 mm resolution. It measures width, thickness and length, maps surface contours and finds surface defects and coating loss, all without contact.

Benchtop Horizontal Platform

A Benchtop Laser Profilometer for Long Parts

What is a laser profilometer inspection system?

A laser profilometer inspection system projects a laser line onto a part and measures how the line deforms to build a 3D profile of the surface. It measures dimensions and surface contours without contact, and finds defects that a 2D camera image can miss.

The platform is a compact, fully automated 3D scanner for QA labs, R&D and low to medium volume production. It is one of three benchtop and inline vision inspection machines from Sciotex, and is designed, programmed and built in-house in the US.

How It Works

How Does the Horizontal 3D Scanner Work?

Each scan follows the same programmed sequence, so results are repeatable from part to part and operator to operator. The software combines depth and reflectivity data into measurements and defect results as soon as the scan ends.

1. Load and scan barcode

The operator loads the part into its fixture and selects the model, and a barcode scan starts the sequence.

2. Laser scan

The sensor captures depth and reflectivity line by line as the stage moves the part at 15 mm/s.

3. Measure and save

Results display on screen and the full 3D dataset saves to disk for review.

What It Inspects

Parts the Horizontal Platform Scans

The platform is designed for elongated parts that need detailed 3D surface mapping in a controlled benchtop setting. Custom fixtures hold each part in the same position, so scans repeat across part families.

  • Metal and plastic extrusions
  • Profiles and moldings
  • Long machined or formed components with surface treatments
  • Parts where coating loss or uniformity matters
  • Industrial parts that need dimensional stability checks

Is the horizontal platform right for you?

Benchtop 3D scanning is often the right fit when you need:

  • Precise 3D surface data beyond 2D imaging
  • Coating loss or uniformity measurements
  • Repeatable profiling of longer parts in a lab or cell
  • A step between manual inspection and inline 3D systems

Why 3D Laser Scanning

Benefits of Non-Contact 3D Inspection

Calipers and contact gauges measure a handful of points and can mark finished surfaces. A laser scan measures the whole profile in one pass. For more on 3D methods, see 3D vision systems for automated inspection.

Non-Contact

Nothing touches the part, so coated and finished surfaces stay unmarked.

True 3D Data

Depth and reflectivity are captured together for dimensions and surface defects.

Repeatable

A stable mechanical design and encoder-triggered scans repeat across shifts and operators.

Easy to Run

Barcode-triggered recipes mean minimal operator training.

Scaling up: methods developed on the benchtop can move to inline 3D inspection with ConveyorVIEW.

Custom Systems

Custom and Inline 3D Scanning

When a standard platform does not fit your parts or your line, Sciotex engineers the scanner around your part sizes, tolerances and process.

  • Scan volume: sized to your longest and tallest parts
  • Fixtures: custom holders for repeatable positioning
  • Sensors: additional views for top and side profiles
  • Results: on-screen metrics, saved 3D datasets and reports

Measure the Whole Profile, Not a Few Points

A caliper check covers a few spots on a long part and depends on the person holding it. The horizontal platform scans the full length and saves every profile, so you can review and compare parts later. Learn how vision inspection systems work.

FAQ

Horizontal 3D Inspection Questions

It projects a laser line onto a part and measures the line’s shape to build a 3D profile. That gives non-contact dimensions, surface contours and defect data in one scan.

It scans at 0.1 mm resolution in X, Y and Z at 15 mm/s.

The standard scan volume is 150 mm wide, 750 mm long and 180 mm high, and it can be expanded for larger parts.

Yes. Reflectivity data shows coating loss and non-uniform areas, and the software calculates defect area from reflectivity drop-outs.

Very little. The operator loads the part and scans a barcode, and the programmed recipe runs the rest.

Yes. Free testing of your sample parts is available to determine the right system configuration.

No. Inspection runs on-premise without third-party APIs or cloud systems, and no subscription or support contract is required.
